Weija-Gbawe NPP Boils Over MP As Landguards Invade Party Election

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing growing unrest in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency, as aggrieved former polling station executives have accused the Member of Parliament (MP), Jerry Ahmed Shaib, of hijacking the party’s internal structures through intimidation, alleged manipulation of the delegates’ register, and the deployment of suspected landguards during the recently concluded constituency executive elections.
The disgruntled party faithful, have petitioned the National Executive Committee (NEC) to annul the outcome of the constituency elections, insisting that the exercise was conducted in defiance of an alleged directive from the party’s national leadership to suspend the polls.
Addressing the media, the former polling station executives called out the MP whose actions, they claimed, are tearing apart the party’s grassroots base instead of strengthening it ahead of the 2028 general elections.

According to them, the elections were marred by fear, intimidation and widespread irregularities, with alleged landguards deployed to threaten delegates and silence members who questioned the process.
“We have never witnessed a situation where landguards are brought into an internal party election. Anyone who speaks against what is happening is threatened with beatings. I have personally received death threats,” one of the aggrieved members alleged.
The group further accused the MP of orchestrating the removal of more than 500 delegates from the constituency’s electoral register in order to influence the outcome of the elections.
“They have removed over 500 delegates. We cannot work with Jerry because we never voted for him. He came to meet us in Weija-Gbawe while we built this party from the grassroots. He does not know the grassroots, yet he has sidelined people who have families, influence and have sacrificed for this party,” another member claimed.
The aggrieved executives also alleged that party members who challenged decisions taken by the MP were deliberately deleted from the delegates’ register.

“If you question Jerry about what is happening, your name disappears from the delegates’ list. If between 400 and 500 delegates have been removed, how do you expect unity?” another former executive alleged.
The group maintained that the elections should never have taken place, claiming the NPP National Chairman had directed constituency executives to suspend the exercise pending further instructions.
They warned that the party risks paying a heavy political price if the leadership fails to intervene.
“If the national leadership refuses to listen to us, we will advise ourselves. We have reported these issues, but nobody seems interested. We cannot continue under these circumstances,” one member cautioned.
Another former executive appealed directly to the party’s national leadership and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to intervene before the constituency descends into deeper division.
“Jerry is pursuing his personal interest instead of the party’s interest. If Dr. Bawumia wants the NPP to recapture power, then the national executives must come to Weija-Gbawe and investigate what is happening. Otherwise, the more than 500 delegates who have allegedly been removed will make their own decision,” the member warned.
The aggrieved executives are demanding a full investigation into the allegations and take steps to restore unity within the Weija-Gbawe Constituency.
At the time of filing this report, the Weija-Gbawe MP, had not publicly responded to the allegations.
Elections Annulled
Meanwhile, national leadership of the party has annulled the purported Constituency Executive Elections conducted in Bantama, Afigya Sekyere East and Adansi Asokwa.
The party cited what it described as blatant breaches of party directives, the rules governing the 2026 Constituency Executive Elections and, in some instances, violations of subsisting court orders.
The decision was taken by the party’s National Steering Committee at a meeting held on Wednesday, July 15, to review the conduct of the nationwide elections held over the weekend.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the party said the elections in the three constituencies were invalid because they were conducted “in flagrant disregard of Party directives, the Rules and Regulations governing the 2026 Constituency Executive Elections, and, where applicable, subsisting court orders.”
Consequently, it said the results from those constituencies have been annulled with immediate effect.
The National Steering Committee has also summoned the Ashanti Regional Steering Committee to appear before it on Tuesday, July 21, to explain the circumstances surrounding the conduct of the elections in the affected constituencies.
The move comes amid controversies that characterised the constituency executive elections in parts of the Ashanti Region over the weekend.
The party further announced that election-related issues concerning Asante Akyem Central, together with all other unresolved constituency election disputes across the country, have been referred to the Electoral Affairs Committee of the National Council.
According to the statement, the committee will provide advice and recommendations on the outstanding matters before any further decisions are taken.
Reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy, the NPP assured members that it would continue to uphold the rule of law and ensure strict adherence to the party’s constitution and regulations.
It stressed that the measures are intended to preserve “the integrity, credibility, and transparency of its internal democratic processes.”
The statement was signed by the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, and the General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.
