Thirteen people have been confirmed dead following a devastating road crash on the Sege-Tema Highway in the Greater Accra Region, with reckless driving suspected to have contributed to the tragedy.
The fatal accident, involving a Ford Transit and a Toyota Hiace, occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as the vehicles were travelling on the Sege Highway towards Ada.
According to information shared on Facebook by Assistant Divisional Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Alex King Nartey, personnel from the Sege Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after the accident was reported.
A total of 18 casualties were recorded in the crash. Thirteen of the victims were pronounced dead, while the remaining five sustained critical injuries and are receiving treatment at the Sege Polyclinic.
The exact circumstances leading to the collision are yet to be officially established, although preliminary reports have raised concerns about reckless driving on the stretch of road.
Details regarding which of the vehicles may have been responsible for the collision have not yet been disclosed, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The latest tragedy has once again brought into sharp focus the dangers of speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices on Ghana’s highways.
Road users have therefore been urged to strictly observe speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking and exercise maximum caution while driving, particularly on busy highways.
The crash adds to the growing number of fatal road accidents across the country and renews calls for greater discipline among motorists to prevent further avoidable loss of lives on Ghana’s roads.
