Atwima Mponua NDC Demands Arrest of Former DCE Over “Reckless” Allegations

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Atwima Mponua Constituency has called for the arrest and investigation of former District Chief Executive (DCE), William Darko, over what it describes as “reckless and unfounded” allegations against the President, John Dramani Mahama.

In a press release issued by the Secretary, Ibrahim Issahak dated March 18, the constituency branch of the party accused Mr. Darko of peddling falsehoods in a viral video circulating on social media.

According to the statement, the former DCE alleged—without evidence—that state funds had been misappropriated and handed to the President’s younger brother, Ibrahim Mahama, for the purchase of a private jet.

The NDC dismissed the claims as “baseless, vexatious and devoid of merit,” insisting they were calculated to mislead the public and erode confidence in the leadership of the country.

It further accused Mr. Darko of attempting to incite public disaffection, particularly among cocoa farmers, by misrepresenting government policies.

Addressing concerns over cocoa pricing, the party explained that recent adjustments in producer prices were driven by a downturn in global cocoa markets, rather than mismanagement.

It noted that Côte d’Ivoire, the world’s leading cocoa producer, had also reduced its prices under similar economic pressures.

On the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), the NDC maintained that the tax had indeed been abolished, contrary to claims made by the former DCE.

It clarified that any remaining charges on mobile money transactions are service fees imposed by telecom operators and financial institutions, not government taxes.

The party stressed that allegations bordering on corruption and abuse of office must be backed by credible evidence, warning that such claims cannot be taken lightly in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.

“We therefore call on the relevant state security and investigative agencies to, as a matter of urgency, invite Mr. William Darko to assist in investigations,” the statement said, adding that he must provide proof to substantiate his claims or face legal consequences.

The NDC also urged public figures, especially former office holders, to exercise restraint in their public commentary, cautioning against the spread of misinformation and inflammatory rhetoric.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the party assured residents of Atwima Mponua and the general public that the government remains focused on delivering its mandate despite what it described as attempts at political distraction.
