NDC Chairmanship Race Heats Up; Sinare, Oppong Fosu Emerge as Front-Runners

As discussions surrounding the next national executive elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) gather momentum, several prominent figures within the party are being mentioned as possible contenders for the National Chairmanship position.

Among the names generating interest are former Ghana Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Alhaji Said Sinare; former Minister for Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye; former Northern Regional Chairman and National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka; and former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Akwasi Oppong Fosu.

Although none of the individuals has officially declared an intention to contest the position, party activists, delegates and political observers have begun assessing the strengths and prospects of potential candidates ahead of the internal elections.

Alhaji Said Sinare is widely regarded as one of the most experienced figures within the NDC’s national leadership structure.

A former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central and former Ghana Ambassador, Sinare has served as National Vice Chairman of the party for nearly 18 years, making him one of the longest-serving national executives in the NDC’s history.

His supporters argue that his extensive experience in party administration, grassroots mobilization, conflict resolution and electoral strategy places him in a strong position should he decide to enter the race.

They also point to his longstanding relationships across the various structures of the party and his role in strengthening the NDC’s support base over the years.

Another figure attracting considerable attention is Akwasi Oppong Fosu, a respected party stalwart whose supporters believe possesses the experience and temperament required to lead the party’s national executive apparatus.

Hailing from the Western and Ashanti Region, Oppong Fosu is widely viewed as a loyal and dedicated party operative with strong connections to both the grassroots and the party’s senior ranks.

Many within the party believe his leadership style could help reinforce discipline and organizational cohesion.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, June 4, the current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) indicated that he would announce his decision on whether to contest the National Chairmanship position after ongoing consultations.

Mr. Oppong Fosu cautioned party members against what he described as a “rush for positions,” warning that premature campaigns could create unnecessary tension within the party.

“At the appropriate time, I’ll make my intentions known. There are consultations ongoing regarding my role within the party,” he stated.

According to him, the consultation process is expected to conclude by the end of June, after which a major announcement will be made regarding his political future and role within the party.

Former Odododiodio MP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye is also being mentioned as a potential contender. Vanderpuye brings significant parliamentary and governmental experience to the table and is widely known for his strong communication skills and active engagement with the party’s grassroots base.

Similarly, Chief Sofo Azorka, who previously served as Northern Regional Chairman before rising to the position of National Vice Chairman, is expected to command considerable support, particularly in Northern Ghana, where he remains an influential figure within the party.

Political analysts believe that if the contest materializes along the lines currently being discussed, it could become one of the most competitive National Chairmanship races in the NDC’s recent history.

Delegates are expected to weigh factors such as experience, party loyalty, organizational capacity, national appeal and the ability to unite the rank and file ahead of future electoral contests.

With consultations reportedly ongoing across various levels of the party, attention is increasingly turning to who eventually emerges as the preferred candidate to steer the NDC’s organizational machinery in the years ahead.

For now, Alhaji Said Sinare’s nearly two decades of service as National Vice Chairman and his extensive experience within the party continue to place him among the leading figures being mentioned in discussions surrounding the coveted National Chairmanship position.
