The leadership of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), through its Functional Executive Committee (FEC), has suspended the Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman, Stephen Ofosu Agyare, from office with immediate effect for a period of five months.
The suspension letter, this paper has gathered, was communicated to Mr. Agyare via WhatsApp on his mobile phone on Thursday, July 22, a day after the party’s national leadership met and took the decision.
The action follows a petition filed by the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, as well as recommendations contained in a letter from the Central Regional Council of Elders, referenced COC/CR/001 and dated July 20, 2026.
In a letter issued by the party’s headquarters on July 22, and signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) said the decision was taken after considering the MP’s petition together with the recommendations submitted by the Central Regional Council of Elders.
According to the party, the FEC, at its meeting held on July 21, 2026, found sufficient grounds to invoke Articles 48(4) and 48(6) of the NDC Constitution.
Interestingly, party insiders alleged that Mr. Agyare, who is regarded as one of the principal financiers of the party in the constituency, was neither invited nor given the opportunity to respond to the allegations contained in the petitions before the suspension decision was taken.
The chairman has therefore been suspended from his position with immediate effect for a period of five months.
“Accordingly, you are hereby suspended from your position as Constituency Chairman of Awutu Senya East Constituency for a period of five (5) months, effective immediately,” the letter noted.
The party further announced that the matter has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee for a full investigation and any further action deemed appropriate under the party’s constitution.
During the period of suspension, the constituency chairman has been directed not to perform any official duties or exercise any authority associated with the office until the disciplinary process is concluded or the party issues further directives.
The NDC also stated that copies of the petition submitted by MP Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor and the report of the Central Regional Council of Elders were attached to the suspension letter.
The party urged the suspended chairman to treat the directive with the seriousness it deserves as investigations into the matter proceed.
