Obuasi Sec Tech Headmaster’s Alleged ‘Ritual Baby’ Exhumed

The body of a male infant, estimated to be between two and three days old, has been exhumed from the campus of Obuasi Senior High Technical School as police intensify investigations into a bizarre incident that sparked violent unrest at the school.

The Obuasi Divisional Police Commander confirmed the development during an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnight yesterday, saying the exhumation formed part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the burial.

The body was exhumed after police, accompanied by other officials, visited the spot where the school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, allegedly buried the infant.

The discovery followed a violent confrontation in which the headmaster was assaulted by students with blood oozing from his face.

Mr. Zakaria, who heads the Obuasi Senior High Technical School, is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi after sustaining injuries during the attack.

According to reports, tensions on campus escalated after some students alleged they had seen the headmaster burying what they believed to be a baby in a nearby bush.

The students further claimed the incident was linked to allegations that the infant resulted from an abortion involving a female student.

The allegations quickly spread across the campus, triggering outrage among students, who reportedly mobilised in the early hours of Wednesday and confronted the headmaster. The confrontation turned violent, with the headmaster allegedly beaten by an angry mob.

The attack also resulted in extensive destruction of school property, including three staff bungalows, vehicles and other valuable assets.

Security personnel were subsequently deployed to the school to restore order and prevent further violence.

Police later exhumed the body believed to be that of the infant from the location identified by the students as investigators commenced forensic and criminal investigations.

The incident brought academic activities to a standstill, with teaching and learning suspended while investigators continued their work. Students remain under heightened security as authorities assess the situation.

Police have cautioned that investigations are still ongoing and have not officially established the circumstances surrounding the burial or the allegations made against the headmaster.

6 students arrested

Meanwhile, six students have been arrested in connection with the assault on the headmaster and are assisting police with investigations.

In the wake of the violence, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly has ordered the indefinite closure of Obuasi Senior High Technical School as a precautionary measure to safeguard students, teaching and non-teaching staff, and prevent further disturbances on campus.

The Assembly said the decision was taken after consultations with security agencies following the violent unrest that engulfed the school.

The condition of the headmaster has not been officially disclosed, although hospital sources indicate he continues to receive medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Police say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
