Mahama, Otumfuo To Grace 30th GJA Awards

President John Dramani Mahama and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, are expected to attend the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards scheduled for November 7, 2026, in Accra.

President Mahama, who is also a member of the GJA, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, while Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Patron of the GJA, will attend the ceremony.

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, will also serve as Guest of Honour at the milestone event.

GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour announced the arrangements at the official launch of the 30th GJA Media Awards in Accra on Wednesday, October 7.

He said the presence of the three traditional and political leaders would add significance to the 30th edition and underscore the importance of journalism to Ghana’s democracy and national development.

The 30th GJA Media Awards is being held under the theme: “30th GJA Media Awards: Celebrating Excellence, Advancing Media Freedom and Combating Hate Speech in the Digital Age.”

Mr Dwumfour said the theme reflected both the achievements of Ghanaian journalism and the challenges facing the profession in the digital era.

He noted that technology and social media had transformed journalism, while artificial intelligence was beginning to reshape how journalists research, produce and distribute news.

However, he stressed that the fundamental responsibilities of journalists remained unchanged.

“We must seek the truth. We must verify information. We must be fair. We must provide context. Above all, we must protect the credibility of our profession,” he said.

He said the awards were about more than trophies, describing them as a means of promoting professional standards, values and journalism that serves the public interest.

Mr Dwumfour urged journalists to choose “accuracy over haste, truth over convenience, courage over fear and integrity over influence.”

He also called on media stakeholders and corporate institutions to continue supporting initiatives that promote professional excellence, media freedom and accountability.

The awards will recognise outstanding journalism across various media categories following the assessment of 327 entries submitted by 206 journalists.
