Several parts of Hohoe in the Volta Region have been hit by severe flooding following hours of torrential rainfall, leaving homes, shops and roads submerged and disrupting movement in the municipality.
The Hohoe Zongo and Picnic areas, as well as other low-lying communities, are among the worst affected by the flooding, with residents facing difficulties moving between affected areas.
The heavy downpour caused a significant rise in the volume of the Danyi River, which drains parts of the area, resulting in water overflowing onto roads and surrounding properties.
The flooding has also affected the area around a bridge, where the increased water flow has compounded the situation and disrupted the movement of motorists, pedestrians and other road users.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has expressed concern over the situation and sympathised with residents who have suffered losses.
In a Facebook post, the MP said the severity of the flooding had resulted in varying degrees of damage and loss to homes, properties and livelihoods.
“I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all individuals and families who have suffered losses as a result of the recent floods,” he said, urging affected residents to remain calm as efforts were being intensified to address the situation.
He said the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Prosper Kumi, together with the Municipal Physical Planning Officer, engineers from the Assembly and officers of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), were on the ground assessing the affected areas.
According to him, the assessment would help determine the extent of the damage and guide further interventions to mitigate the impact of the flooding and prevent a recurrence.
The MCE and the technical team have since visited some of the affected areas to assess the situation and explore measures to address the flooding.
Meanwhile, residents have called for urgent intervention to deal with the immediate impact of the floods and find lasting solutions to recurring flooding around the affected bridge and low-lying areas.
They are also appealing for measures to improve drainage and water flow in the area to prevent further damage and protect lives and property.
