Mahama to Build 400-Bed Mother & Child Block at Korle Bu
…Facility to replace dilapidated Maternity Unit
The Presidency has announced plans by President John Dramani Mahama-led government to construct and equip a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.
Land preparation has already begun for the construction of the state-of-the-art facility, which is expected to replace the hospital’s existing dilapidated Maternity Unit.
According to the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the new facility will provide comprehensive and specialised maternal and child healthcare services.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, disclosed this in a Facebook post on Monday, September 21.
He said the facility would house a range of specialised departments and units, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards, Labour and Delivery Suites, Operating Theatres and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Other facilities will include a High Dependency Unit (HDU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, as well as Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics.
The block will also have Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics, Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units, an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit and a Diagnostic Imaging Department.
It will further provide laboratory and blood bank facilities, a pharmacy, Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), physiotherapy and rehabilitation units, as well as facilities for teaching, research and conferences.
The project is expected to significantly improve maternal and child healthcare delivery at Korle Bu and provide modern infrastructure for specialised services at Ghana’s premier teaching hospital.
