Polluted River Ewuso Shows Signs of Recovery

The River Ewuso in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region is showing signs of recovery following a recent operation by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to flush out illegal miners, popularly known as galamsey operators.

The river had been heavily polluted by illegal mining activities, but weeks after NAIMOS intensified its operations in the Eastern Region, visible improvements have been recorded in some previously degraded water bodies.

A tour conducted by a team from the Eastern Regional Security Liaison Office to assess areas earlier raided by the NAIMOS taskforce revealed remarkable signs of recovery, particularly along the River Ewuso in Atiwa West.

The river, which was cleared of illegal miners during NAIMOS’ Christmas and New Year crackdown, was observed to have improved significantly.

The progress has been attributed to the resolve of NAIMOS, with support from the Regional Security Council and other security agencies.

Speaking on the development, the Director of Operations at NAIMOS said the taskforce would continue its sustained raids along river bodies until similar positive results are achieved across the region and the country at large.

He noted that major rivers such as the Ayensu, Birim and Pra remain key targets in the ongoing fight against illegal mining.

He further issued a stern warning to illegal miners, cautioning that any attempt to return to areas already cleared by the taskforce would be met with severe sanctions.

The update was shared in a Facebook post by Elikem Eric Kotoko, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission.

He commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, and his Deputy, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, for their leadership and commitment to restoring the country’s degraded forest and water resources.
