NPP Was Allergic to Road Construction in Volta – Minister

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the opposition of deliberately neglecting the Volta Region in road infrastructure development during their tenure in government.
Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony in Titrinu on Tuesday, September 16, the Minister described the NPP as “allergic to road construction in the Volta Region,” alleging that successive administrations under the party consistently ignored critical road projects that would have spurred socio-economic development in the area.
“Where others turned a blind eye, President Mahama has stepped in with bold interventions,” Gunu declared. “These road projects will not only improve connectivity but also open new opportunities for businesses, farmers, and the youth.”
According to the Minister, poor road infrastructure has long hampered agricultural productivity, trade, access to healthcare, and economic growth in the region. He emphasized that the neglect has had far-reaching effects on the livelihoods of residents.
Mr Gunu announced that under former President John Dramani Mahama’s “Big Push Project,” major roads across the region — including the vital Ho-Aflao stretch — will receive immediate attention.
He described the initiative as a demonstration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s commitment to equitable development across all regions.
The ceremony attracted traditional leaders, local residents, and NDC party faithful, many of whom hailed the move as a long-overdue intervention. Community chiefs pledged their support and urged the government to ensure the timely and quality execution of the projects.
Residents expressed optimism, describing the road projects as a major relief after years of neglect.
They said improved road networks would reduce travel times, attract investment, and improve access to markets and essential services.
The “Big Push Project” is one of the NDC’s flagship infrastructure initiatives, aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s development through large-scale investment in roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities.
For the Volta Region, officials say the road component is expected to transform communities and restore public confidence in the government’s pledge to national inclusiveness.
