NHIA Staff Donate GH₵800,000 to Medical Trust Fund; Set Pace For Corporate Ghana

Management and staff of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) have donated a total of GH₵800,000 to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), popularly known as MahamaCares, following a passionate appeal to corporate Ghana.

The donation, made yesterday, comes in response to a call by the Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Ms. Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, urging corporate institutions to support the Fund’s mission of providing life-saving care to patients, particularly those living with non-communicable diseases.

Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, described the gesture as a reflection of the Authority’s belief in the vision of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and confidence in its leadership.

Dr. Bampoe said he was “especially proud” of the NHIA family for coming together voluntarily to raise the funds.

“This was not an institutional directive but a spontaneous act of compassion by people who believe that saving lives is a shared responsibility,” he said.

According to him, the gesture demonstrates what can be achieved when public servants lead with empathy and purpose.

“It reflects belief in the vision behind the Ghana Medical Trust Fund–MahamaCares and confidence in the leadership of Ms. Obuobia Darko-Opoku and her team,” he added.

Dr. Bampoe noted that the work of the Fund is far from complete and called on other corporate bodies, organisations and individuals to contribute.

“It truly takes a community to save a community. I therefore join the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in calling on institutions, organisations and individuals to support this growing national effort to ensure that no one is denied life-saving care because of financial constraints,” he stated.

Management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund expressed deep appreciation for the donation, describing it as a timely response to their call for support.

“When we cried out for help, they didn’t hesitate. They showed up,” the Fund said in a statement.

The Fund described the gesture as “love in action,” noting that during the month traditionally associated with expressions of affection, the NHIA chose compassion with impact.

According to the statement, the donation raised through voluntary contributions from NHIA management and staff will directly ease suffering, restore hope, and support patients and families battling serious health conditions.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund also extended special appreciation to Dr. Bampoe for his consistent support since the inception of the Fund, noting that leadership rooted in empathy inspires collective action.

The Fund has called on the public to join the initiative by contributing through *USSD 255# across all networks, or via direct bank transfers to the National Investment Bank (Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Account No. 1135105341202, Airport Branch) or First Atlantic Bank (Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Account No. 2613171101016, Head Office Branch).
