High Court Grants Freddie Blay GH₵800,000 Bail with Two Sureties

The Koforidua High Court in the Eastern Region has granted bail in the sum of GH₵800,000 to Freddie Blay, former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with two sureties.

The bail was granted on Wednesday, March 18, following an appeal filed by his legal team, led by former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

Blay had earlier been remanded into police custody for three weeks by the Akropong Circuit Court over an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase in the Eastern Region.

He was taken into custody after police executed a bench warrant issued for his arrest.

Officers in Accra subsequently handed him over to the Ghana Police Service in Akropong on Monday, March 16, 2026.

The warrant was reportedly issued after Blay failed to appear before the court on a previously scheduled date in connection with charges brought against him.

The case centres on allegations that he authorised the demolition of a house under construction on a parcel of land at Kitase.

According to information presented in court, the landowner lodged a complaint with the police, prompting investigators to invite Blay to assist with inquiries. Police sources say he allegedly failed to honour the invitation, leading to charges being filed.

Court records indicate that Blay was expected to appear in April 2025 when the matter was first scheduled for hearing. However, he reportedly failed to show up and did not provide any explanation for his absence.

A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest and remained outstanding until it was executed earlier this week.

Sources close to Blay have, however, disputed claims that he deliberately evaded the court process, insisting he had no prior knowledge of the warrant.

They further explained that the dispute relates to a parcel of land Blay is said to have purchased in 1994, which later became the subject of litigation.

According to the sources, a judgment delivered by the Koforidua High Court went in favour of the complainant, but the decision has since been appealed and remains before an appellate court.

They also indicated that attempts to serve the complainant with legal processes related to the appeal have been unsuccessful.

The sources maintained that aside from the pending appeal, Blay was unaware of any additional case and only became aware of the arrest warrant when it was executed on Monday.

The case is expected to continue before the Akropong Circuit Court as investigations and legal proceedings proceed.
