“Greedy Appointees” Misleading Regional Minister – Journalist Alleges

An Accra-based journalist with Radio Gold, Ransford Boakye, has accused the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, of being deceived by what he described as “greedy appointees” to unlawfully lockdown some companies in the region.

According to Mr. Boakye, the alleged actions have left more than 300 Ghanaian workers stranded.

The host of Radio Gold’s afternoon political talk show, ‘Pampasoɔ’, made the claims in a Facebook post on Saturday, January 31, but did not mention the names of the companies affected.

“The Greater Accra Regional Minister is being deceived by some greedy appointees to lock down companies unlawfully, leaving over 300 Ghanaian workers stranded,” he wrote.

It remains unclear whether the journalist’s comments were triggered by the recent demolition exercises and the declaration of the Nmai-Djor Trasaaco-Botima enclave in Accra as a security zone by the Regional Minister.

Mr. Boakye’s post has since generated mixed reactions online.

While some followers cautioned the Minister to tread carefully to avoid creating challenges for the government, others criticised the journalist for raising the issue publicly rather than engaging the Minister privately.

Security Zone Declaration

Last Friday, the Greater Accra Regional Minister declared the Nmai-Djor Trasaaco-Botima enclave, located in the Adenta West Municipality, a security zone with immediate effect.

The decision follows ongoing land ownership disputes between traditional authorities and family interests in the area.

The announcement was made during the signing of performance contracts by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Coordinating Directors at the Greater Accra Regional Council on January 30.

As part of the directive, all development projects in the enclave have been suspended until further notice, pending a final court ruling.

Madam Ocloo warned that individuals who defy the directive will face enforcement actions, including the demolition of unauthorised structures.

She further disclosed that police and military personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order, stressing that only security operatives authorised by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) are permitted to operate in the area.

The Minister assured residents that REGSEC would continue to monitor the situation closely to preserve peace and safety.

The Regional Minister also expressed concern about the increasing incidence of market fires across the region and urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to allocate space in markets for the permanent stationing of Ghana National Fire Service personnel to ensure swift emergency response.
