Sakumono Murders: MP Wants Suspect Executed Live If Convicted

Sakumono Murders: MP Wants Suspect Executed Live If Convicted

Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A-Plus, has called for the death penalty for the 72-year-old man arrested for murdering two people at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region, proposing that his execution be broadcast live if convicted.

The lawmaker argued that imposing the death penalty and broadcasting its execution would serve as a deterrent to others, stressing that human life was sacred and that those who took lives must face severe consequences.

In a Facebook post sighted by The Archives, Kwame A-Plus expressed concern about the trauma suffered by the families of the victims, particularly the children of one of the deceased.

“At 72 years old, you allegedly took the lives of two people in the presence of your wife, while the children of one of your victims were at home. How are those children ever supposed to recover from such trauma? How do they make sense of watching their family shattered by such senseless violence?” he queried.

He added: “If I were President of Ghana, I would ensure that he receives the death penalty and his execution is broadcast live if found guilty to serve as a deterrent to others. Some crimes must have consequences severe enough to make people think twice before committing them.

“People must understand that human life is sacred and that there must be consequences for taking it. People must learn sense!”

His comments follow the arrest of the 72-year-old suspect, who was picked up at Tikrom, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, in connection with the killings of Irene Atubiga and her uncle, George Atubiga, at Sakumono.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement issued on Monday, November 2, identified the suspect as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto and confirmed that he was arrested at his hideout on Sunday, November 1.

The police also disclosed that a Smith & Wesson pistol and seven rounds of live ammunition were retrieved from him during the operation.

“Acting on intelligence regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, a police team proceeded to his hideout and successfully apprehended him. During the operation, a Smith & Wesson pistol together with seven (7) rounds of live ammunition was retrieved from him,” the statement said.

The arrest followed the killing of Irene, 47, and her uncle, George, 57, at their residence at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, in the Greater Accra Region, on Friday, October 30, 2026.

GH¢500,000 Debt Dispute

According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the killings stemmed from a financial dispute between the suspect and George Atubiga.

The suspect allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from George but failed to repay the money.

An earlier police account indicated that the suspect had visited the victims’ residence with a 47-year-old woman, identified as Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of the money.

A misunderstanding allegedly ensued, culminating in the fatal shooting of the two victims.

Beatrice Mumuni was the first to be arrested in connection with the incident.

The 72-year-old suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, while the recovered firearm and ammunition have been retained as exhibits.

“The suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, while the recovered firearm and ammunition have been retained as exhibits,” the Ashanti Regional Police Command added.
