Zoomlion Resolves Sanitation Challenges in Asante Akyem South; Launches Probe

Zoomlion Ghana Limited has taken swift action to address sanitation challenges in the Asante Akyem South Municipality following concerns raised during a sitting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Kumasi.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Maame Safoah Appiah, had told the committee on April 21, 2026, that the municipality was grappling with refuse spillages at communal container sites, deteriorating waste bins, and fuel constraints affecting waste evacuation.

In response, Zoomlion engaged the MCE immediately after the hearing and pledged to investigate the issues without delay.

A high-powered team was dispatched to the municipality on April 22 to conduct a comprehensive assessment.

The team, comprising senior officials including the Chief Internal Auditor, Group Head of Internal Control, General Manager, Regional Coordinator, District Manager, and Operations Assistant met with municipal authorities before undertaking field inspections.

Investigations covered nine communal container sites, the landfill, and consultations with military personnel overseeing fuel supplies, as well as the Municipal Head of Environment.

Findings confirmed significant waste spillages across all inspected sites. Two containers required urgent repairs, while two others needed replacement. Five were found to be in good condition.

The probe also identified fuel supply disruptions as a key operational challenge. A shortage at the designated Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) station, the municipality’s sole approved fuel supplier at the time—led to delays in waste evacuation.

Contrary to claims made at the PAC hearing, the report clarified that the MCE did not personally finance fuel purchases.

Although she offered to do so through the Municipal Environmental Health Officer on April 21, Zoomlion staff declined, as fuel had become available at the GOIL station.

Following the findings, Zoomlion implemented immediate corrective measures, spending nearly GH¢20,000 on equipment hire, fuel, and labour to clear accumulated waste.

The company also acknowledged support from the MCE, who provided additional trucks.

Zoomlion apologised for the situation and assured residents of its commitment to restoring and maintaining sanitation standards.

Subsequently, refuse at all affected sites has been cleared, with significant improvements in cleanliness reported across the municipality.

The company has also outlined long-term interventions, including supplying additional containers, repairing faulty trucks, diversifying fuel supply sources, and strengthening its “Operation No Spillage” initiative to prevent future occurrences.

Zoomlion reaffirmed its commitment to working with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies nationwide to ensure clean and healthy communities.
